I am a bit of an early adopter of social media channels as is most people in my social media circles. I grew up with the philosphy of the early bird gets the worm and I’ve extended that into my adoption of social media channels. I must say that it seems to be very effective and is really working for my social media strategy.

There is a growing list of platforms to try and to be a part of. It can be overwhelming making a selection of which one to try. I created a blog post on the 12 platforms that we all need to be rocking for 2012 and I really believe that these platform should be a part of any successful social media strategy.

One of the things that I’ve heard after creating that post and in general is how overwhelmed people are by the amount of platforms that are constantly being pushed at them. As an early adopter of lots of the technology platforms, I am definitely on board with trying them all out. As with anything, some platforms will stick and some will not. Ultimately we have to stick with the platforms that fit the needs of our social media goal. I don’t think we should short change ourselves and our social media strategy by minimizing any platform because we can not squeeze another social media channel into our day.

A few that you CAN’T overlook and the reason why:

Facebook has 900 millions users and people share content at an alarming speed if it’s good content. Also, the thought of having the potential to reach just a percentage of those 900 million users at any level is good business.

Twitter has 500 million users and allows users to strategically focus on content by way of #(hashtag) used to promote specific all all within 140 characters. Twitter is a GREAT sharing platform. It allows you to engage your followers while becoming an authority in your area by providing useful and relevant content.

Google plus has 100 million users and is growing at a fast rate of speed in comparison to some other social media channels. The demographic is different than Facebook and we should think of this as an exceptional product created by Google which is a driving force behind what we know as the Internet. Any product that Google is connected with is usually huge. That it is connected with Google is reason enough to explore it thoroughly and not minimize its importance. Additionally exposure to up to 100 million users is not too bad.

Pinterest has over 10 Million users and is a visual content driven platform. Photo and visual content is a growing avenue in digital marketing and can be used to drive traffic from these platforms to blogs and websites. Visual marketing is the next biggest thing.

StumbleUpon has 10 million users and is one of the most overlooked social sharing and bookmarking platforms online but is also a HUGE channel to drive traffic.

Tumblr has over 39 millions users and is one of the most popular microblogging platforms out there.

WordPress is THE most powerful blogging platform on the market because of its ability to incorporate easy to use plugins and very powerful add-ons. Additionally, Google loves WordPress blogs.

These platforms are MUST HAVE’S for anyone involved with brand and or company promotion by way of social Media

Lets face it, traditional marketing is very different that it was 10 years ago, 5 years ago, even just 2 years ago. Just think about how your life has evolved in, lets say the last 5 years. At one time when we wanted to see what was on tv, we checked TV Guide now we go online. When we wanted to sell something we placed an ad in the paper, now we hit Craigs List. When we want the latest news we go online to social media or websites. Things have really changed right before our eyes.

It is not even an option to look toward social media anymore it is mandatory if you do not want to go down hill. Face it if no one is reading a newspaper why post an ad? If no one is reading, this makes your marketing strategy very unsuccessful because you are not reaching yoru target marketing. The goal of marketing a business is reaching your target market, so if this marketing is online that’s where you must go also.

I created a post in my Marketing blog that discussed in detail which platforms should be utilized to create an effective Social Media Strategy. Take a look at the 12 platforms that we should ALL be using to rock our social media campaign in order to be effective in 2012.

Facebook

There are a lot of people that have issues with Facebook for whatever reason. STOP TRIPPIN’ people! Yeah I said it. Facebook, love it or hate it but they have around 800 million users and they are still growing. This is HUGE for your ability to build your brand. It’s not really about love or hate, frankly it’s about business, brand exposure and Cha-ching!

Facebook has now created an option to Subscribe. This is HUGE for people that use their personal Facebook page for networking, like me. This allows people that follow you on other channels to follow you on your Facebook personal page without becoming your friend. Remember if you opt to allow people to subscribe to your updates, remember to provide some information that would appeal to them and use the public option to post.

Facebook is a driving force behind social mediaand if you are smart you will take advantage of this to propel your brand. The new revamped Facebook Timeline with ability to offer people the opportunity to subscribe to your updates is HUGE for your brand. Add the power of the Facebook Business Page and that makes a power combination.

When you scoff at Facebook, think about which comparable platforms offer you the ability to reach up to 800 million people. So if you have jumped off the Facebook bandwagon, I suggest jumping back on. 800 million people, there’s nothing to think about, just do it.
Twitter

Twitter offers a HUGE opportunity to reach out to an unlimited amount of people, with 140 characters. Things to keep in mind, don’t spam, don’t shove your marketing message and or sales pitch down the throats of your followers. They don’t care what your selling. REALLY. Twitter is about sharing content that is of value to your followers, NOT about you, your message and what you’re selling. The plus is that providing great content and valuable information will put you in a position to be viewed as an authority within your subject area. This will increase your chances of turning followers into potential clients, clients and or people to collaborate with. Twitter is HUGE, use it.

Google +

Is the new kid on the block and is really being minimized by many. This is a platform that should be taken serious if nothing more than realizing that Google RAWKS. The Internet would NOT be the same if Google wasn’t a huge player. Google+ is not just a social media platform but a Game changer. Google + will change the Internet as we know it like they did with the introduction of Google and the domination of the Internet since then. Google will take every platform that they own or that they plan to own and add it to Google+ to make it ROCK. BELIEVE IT! Google+ is the Game changer because it is the beginning of Social Search. Grab a Google+ Page for your business as well. Pay attention peeps.

Scoop.it

Curation is a huge part of the future of the Internet, primarily because there is an abundance or over abundance of information floating about on the millions of social media channels. People are quite literally overwhelmed by the amount of information that is being chucked at them. Curationallows the curator to compile topics of interest by weeding through the information, finding what’s of relevance to their demographic of followers and supply that information to their followers. This is what Scoop.it is all about and you need to check it out.

Tumblr

Is an extremely social media oriented blogging platform that is easy to share, easy to follow and extremely popular. I use my Tumblr account everyday. Tumblr is great for supplying small segments of information, pictures and quotes to people that are interested in grabbing quick information.

WordPress

Is one of the most powerful blogging platforms available now. I am a reformed WordPress basher that really didn’t get the big hoopla about WordPress until I used it myself. I was using Posterous as my primary blog platform of choice, they changed their format and IMHO Jumped the Shark. So, I was almost forced to look at the only blogging platform that I hadn’t tried and that was WordPress. I like the functionality of the free platform and I really REALLY love the self hosted WordPress.org option. Since WordPress added the option to subscribe for most of the blogs, they are now the best in my book. I use the Free format for everyday, uncomplicated blogging and the self hosted format for my more involved blogging needs.

StumbleUpon

Is one of the most underutilized and underused formats in the social media game. Stumbleupon will give some serious juice to your content. I have included it as a sharing option on my blogs, I’ve added it to my Chrome Plugin and I Stumble every blog that I +1 and share. Use it!

Commun.it

Is one of the BEST Twitter management tools that I’ve ever used. I am usually not one for Twitter management tools; However, I really LOVE Commun.it. This platforms helps you to focus on people that are your most engaged members, supporters and influences. That’s huge because it allows you to know who is really in touch with your brand so you can actively engage with them. This is “For The Win” for creating an active and engaged Twitter following. Commun.it also gives you an indication of those that have unfollowed you and those that you should consider unfollowing based on lack of engagement. This is a must in your arsenal for 2012. It is still in Beta and by invite only so if you want, grab INVITES

Empire Avenue

Is first and foremost a great way to meet some really AMAZING people, not just any people but the Social Media Elite ( my opinion) There are so many people in technology and social media related fields playing this social media stock market game.

What’s good about Empire Avenue is that it numerically rates your social media activity by platform and assigns a dividend (div) amount based on how engaging your content is. The dividend is payed out daily to people that buy your shares, sort of like dividends in real stock market.

You can register as an individual or as a company. After you register, connect your social media channels and watch your share price and divs go up. There is a big drive to buy n00bs, because players have an opportunity to buy shares at a low price.

This game is not for the faint of heart. If you content sucks, your divs will suck and people unload your shares. The good thing is that share price and divs can give you an indication of things in your social media strategy that you may need to work on. What’s more important than the gaming aspect, is that Empire Avenue offers players the opportunity to meet and learn from some of the most amazing, tech savvy people that they will ever meet. Join, then chase down the Facebook Groups, Social Empire, Team Zen, XBar and Eav Winners. Join the groups, learn the game and meet the amazing people behind the game.

Twyla

I am still learning a lot about Twyla but this is one of the platforms that I will be using more. One of the HUGE things about Twyla that I like is the POWER TWEET. It allows you to create the most powerful tweet ever. Twylah is still in Beta so you have to ask for invites.

Pinterest

Is Image driven Google juice. It is the “New” Hot Social Media Platform, although I hear it’s been around for a while. Either way everyone is jumping on it, primarily because people really love pics and that is the driving force behind Pinterest. It allows you to grab pics from online sources, Flickr, Urls and uploaded images and add to your boards. People can then share those images by repinning them. You can also embed the images, which is really cool. I just started using this and I really like it.

Triberr

Is the ultimate source of Blog Juice! One of the things about blogging is the ability to get your content out there, shared, Tweeted etc. You can have the greatest blog out in the world with the most wonderful content but if no one reads it, the content is almost irrelevant. Triberr is the key to getting readers for your blog content.

Triberr allows a user to create a Tribe and add members to their tribe. All tribe members can add an RSS of their blog which then gives the tribe members an opportunity to share this content with their Twitter followers. This is huge for brand awareness, blog traffic, subscribers and potentially for meeting clients and collaborators.

When a person is invited to a Tribe they can then create a new Tribe of their own and invite members. Triberr is still in beta so you will need an invite, which are not really spread around like other Beta platforms. This is primarily because to offer an invite to Triberr is inviting that person into your Tribe.

The key to being successful with Triberr is being very selective about who you invite to your Tribe and careful about Tribes that you join. I find that it is best to have similar and or complementary content as the people in your Tribe. Also, make sure any Tribe that you join have members that are willing to share your content with their Twitter followers as you are willing to share with yours. I’ve learned these things the hard way so I am very selective about Tribes that I join. If you join a Tribe that does not meet your expectations there, just bounce. I would, I have and would do so again.

OK, Get Started!

Social Media has become HUGE within the past few years, it has really grown at a mind boggling rate of speed. People that are heavily involved with this technology have to make a daily effort to keep up with some of the changes that have taken place. This is very exciting to those that are really very involved with technology. We all thrive from the changes and are more than ready to jump into the newest, latest and hottest beta platform to try out. This is amazing for people that thrive on this kind of thing but for businesses this could really be a huge challenge.

When thinking about marketing by way of online channels, companies should look beyond JUST Social Media although Social Media should be a start. There needs to be a plan to analyze all aspects of Internet Marketing, the benefits to an organization and expanding beyond just Facebook and Twitter.

In this era of such growth in marketing by way of online methods there needs to be an inclusion of a variety of online methods in order to compete with ones competitors. This has become especially important because traditional marketing has changed due to the growth of online marketing.

Take a look at the image above to give you an idea of why you should not limit your company to JUST Social Media. I am not knocking Social Media by any stretch because I think social media is awesome. I am just thinking, why limit your company exposure to Twitter, Facebook and other social media channels when you can extend your reach so much beyond those channels. This creates limitless opportunities of exposure for your company. Think about this, when marketing your company by way of traditional media are you minimizing your efforts? Why do so with social media? Expand your social media efforts to Internet Marketing, it will only benefit your organization.

We are all bordering on being overwhelmed by so many social media channels that continue to pop up. It can be a lot to keep up with all of them and even tougher to chose which channels are ideal for our brand. We all know that Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and a WordPress blog is a MUST. At one time I would have added Flickr to the list for its visual appeal to the masses, however now I am going to have to go with Pinterest instead.

The reason that I am opting to go with Pinterest, besides it just amazingly cool appeal is that it drives traffic. YES IT DOES DRIVE TRAFFIC. Additionally, if you are in any sales, marketing or product related industry I would venture to say that it is a perfect social media channel for your brand whatever it may be.

In sales and Marketing Industries especially those that are product driven can be tough for traditional social media as social media is not suppose to be about selling. For the record I think that is a bunch of crap because EVERYTHING IS ABOUT SELLING. However that is another few blog posts and I will not get into that now.

At one time I used Flickr as my avenue to store images, as a way to drive some traffic and an added bonus of Google Juice. That was until I discovered Pinterest which has become one of my better sources of Google Juice and a huge driver of traffic to my blogs. I almost immediately noticed traffic in my analytics reports from Pinterest and the traffic was right up there with Facebook, Twitter and Stumbleupon. This is HUGE therefore I recommend that any businesses that have product lines or sell items that can be displayed in a visual manner, immeditely create a profile on Pinterest.

Take a look at the video below to give you an idea how to use Pinterest for your sales & marketing strategy. Nothing else, just do it.

Social Media has become so very important to most companies now and as its importance grows so does the need to add it to our marketing strategy. It is no longer optional that we have an effective social media presence, it is quickly becoming mandatory. So when we decide to jump into those social media waters there are somethings that we must remember in order to be as effective as possible.

Branding a company is a HUGE part of any business but one that we tend to not pay close attention to when we set up our social media presence. I would venture to say that Branding is a MORE important part of a Social Media campaign because sometimes social media is the only presence a client or potential client will see before they decide to do business with you. Long gone are the days that a face to face meeting is mandatory. Now, more times than not a person will see your social media presence before they meet you in person. There are times when a face to face meeting is not even an option. This is why effectively branding your social media presence is so very important.

Think of branding your social media presence like wearing your best suit for a job interview. Take a look at the short video I created about effective branding.

Facebook was at one time a very private, approval based social media channel but times have changed a bit IF you opt to take advantage of those changes. I guess this could be viewed as a double edged sword if you opt to view it that way. However it could be viewed in a very positive way if you are using Facebook as an avenue to meet with people and extend your network.

One of the primary reasons to allow people to subscribe to your public status updates is to extend your network and branch out beyond people that you have selected to be a part of your friends list. Allowing subscriptions to your public updates allows you to open your network and meet amazing people all while sharing information that you choose to allow them to view.

Facebook allowing the option to present people with the option of subscribing to another persons public updates presents and avenue in which to have a social media presence that allows you to separate information that you chose to share with different segments of your followers. This is similar to what Google+ does with circles and can be used to your advantage to benefit your company marketing strategy. Take a bit of a peak at my public status updates below:

Once you decide to allow public updates, remember to provide something for your public subscribers to see. It’s nothing like going to a page that has allowed public updates but never provides any content to be viewed. YAWN …Boring. Take a look at part of my public updates page above. The good thing about this is that there are a few things that you can add which will populate your page nicely for viewing by followers.

Status Updates: Create a status update as a morning greeting and use that as an avenue daily to address people that are following your public updates.

Add Apps: There are great apps that post directly to your Timeline. I love GetGlue and I use this to post directly to my Timeline. It provides content and its a great platform. If you are unfamiliar, its a bit like Foursquare but for lazy people. LOL Just kidding, but it allows a person to “Check-in” to TV shows. It is a tad bit addictive so beware

Set up automatic posting of content that followers would find entertaining and of value.

Ok, get to it, have fun and most importantly share great content!

As business owners in a climate that is ever changing we need ever advantage that we can get, especially in regard to marketing our businesses. Things have really changed drastically within the past two years and it is really almost mind numbing.

I just had a meeting and had a discussion about how fast technology and social media is growing. One of the people in the meeting asked how does one keep up with the super quick pace of technology growth. I explained that as an Internet Marketer you MUST be willing to learn something new every day.

Google+ is the something new that we must all try to wrap our minds around. SERIOUSLY. Google is the master of search and now they are trying to be the master of the Internet by creating an avenue in which you must be involved with Google+ to some degree if you are in business.

Google has now moved full force into Social Search by merging traditional search results with social media results. This is HUGE for anyone in business. A few things you can do to get on board quickly.

Create a Google+ Profile for yourself and your business even if you choose not to be on the platform religiously.

Start using the +1 button, this will add content you’ve +1′d to your Google+ page

Add the +1 button to your blog so that people can easily +1 your content.

Take a look at the short video that I created that will display the importance of shared content in Google Search results.

Ok, stop reading and get on board with Google+. Don’t forget to Add me to your cirlces!

Ok, ok, yeah Anise talking about Timeline again. I do tend to talk about it quite a bit and as I realize new cool things I have a need to blog about them. At the very least it makes for interesting conversation.

Well, one thing that I just noticed was the huge sales real estate opportunity that Timeline for personal and now branded pages offers. For a person that is in a sales driven industry this is HUGE! So we really should STOP looking at Timeline as a big change and inconvenience but we should start looking at it as a way to utilize the huge amount of online real estate that’s offered in order to promote our brands.

Since I use my personal Facebook page as about 90% networking opportunity and 10% friends and family I see all space given as an avenue to display my capabilities. Most situations can be utilized as an opportunity.

Now with the roll out of Facebook Timeline for Brands it is an even bigger opportunity to utilized the generous real estate offered by Facebook as a means to display your capabilities. This is especially important if your have a small business, or any sized business for that matter.

Well, I was a tad bit peeved that Facebook no longer allowed our brand landing page to be the default page, which means that for brands the custom iFrame Page will no longer be the page that visitors land on when they go to your Facebook Page. Visitors will automatically land on the page Timeline.

The consolation prize that was offered by Facebook is the ability to create a larger iFrame page, this is the Real Estate I have been referencing. So now instead of cramming all the information that you want to display on your landing page within a space of a little over 500 px we now get a whopping 810px. This is a huge! Take a look at the images below of my Facebook Landing page before Timeline and the newly created wider landing page that I am utilizing now.

Pre-Timeline Landing Page approximately 500px Wide

New Timeline Landing Page 810px Wide

Notice in the new Landing Page, I used it as an opportunity to tweak the brand a bit. I also used the larger space to condense the page a bit. Previously I had 6 pages but since I had more space to work with I added a lot of the contact information directly to the larger banner, displayed our capabilities and added a video of our capabilities. All of this on one page due to the increase in size of the page, this is For The Win for my business!

So, ultimately, if you are using Facebook for business, Timeline offers much greater possibilities to display capabilities visually. Although we give up a few things with Timeline for brands in the way of the default landing page within our Facebook page we do have a huge amount of Facebook Real Estate in which to display our companies in a creative way as I’ve displayed above.

Ok time is A-Wastin’ get to it…go create your Timeline for your brand!

I am pretty sure it will get you prepared to make your Timeline shine for your brand. Take a look at the two videos below and they should answer EVERY question that you have about how Timeline will work for your brand.
